SEAS – Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis

The date of the repeat seminar will be announced soon

What is SEAS?

SEAS is an acronym for “Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis”. The principles of SEAS are based on a specific form of auto-correction (termed active self-correction) that is taught individually to every patient and then associated with stabilizing exercises, including neuromotor control and proprioceptive training balance. The exercises are also incorporated into daily living activities. The SEAS approach is also characterized by a cognitive-behavioural approach towards the patient and his family to maximize compliance to treatment.

Exercise treatment is the key to a good rehabilitation approach to scoliosis.
SEAS exercises aim to avoid or at least postpone bracing and arrive at the end of growth with a presumably stable curvature.
When a brace has already been prescribed, exercises are mandatory to avoid all side effects of bracing, increase its function, and allow the spine to be stable during the weaning period and when the brace is abandoned.

Why should you adopt the SEAS approach?

  • Evidence in literature. Up to now, there is a body of evidence on the SEAS approach suggesting the effectiveness of the approach at different stages and in other situations of scoliosis management.
  • Outstanding enlargement of patients eligible for the treatment. The exercise program consists of individually adapted exercises taught to patients in a facility dedicated to scoliosis treatment.
Patients perform a single session every 2-3 months in the facility, in which they are evaluated by a scoliosis expert physiotherapist and learn their personalized exercise protocol.
Then, patients will attend your centre to do exercises or, if they come from far apart, they’ll continue the treatment in a rehabilitation facility near home (or by themselves and/or with their parents).
Consequently, patients coming from far apart will be able to attend the rehabilitation program in your centre, as happens every day in our centres in Italy. No specific expensive devices are needed.
  • Free Software Access via the internet. This is ScoliosisManager. ISICO makes available via the internet for free, the software developed in these years with hundreds of SEAS exercises ready for use. In this course, you’ll learn how to use the software and the crucial point to choose and adapt exercises based on the patient’s individual needs.

The SEAS Accreditation Programme

The SEAS Accreditation Programme is a path that takes the participants step by step to deeper and certified knowledge of the SEAS approach.

Topics of SEAS Level 1

The course (3 days) includes the basic teaching of the SEAS approach:

  • SEAS approach.
  • SEAS clinical assessment.
  • Active self-correction in coronal, horizontal and sagittal planes.
  • SEAS exercises.
  • Scoliosis Manager.
  • Clinical cases.

Topics of the SEAS Level 2

The participant must have been Level 1 certified at least 6 months prior to the Level 2 course.

The course (3 days) includes the advanced stage of treatment for scoliosis:

  • SEAS self-correction combined movements.
  • Evolution of the complexity of the exercises and the complexity of self-correction.
  • Simplified self-correction for application in daily life.
  • The spinopelvic sagittal alignment.
  • SEAS treatment of sagittal alignment pathologies: hyperkyphosis dorsal, dorso-lumbar kyphosis.
  • SEAS treatment of adult deformities.
  • Screening for scoliosis.
  • Clinical cases.

SOSORT GUIDELINES

ISICO, in its approach to the conservative treatment of scoliosis, is consistent with the SOSORT guidelines of Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation treatment of idiopathic scoliosis during growth in all passages, starting from the clinical assessment to physiotherapy treatment with the SEAS exercises, up to treatment with a brace.

Hence, the SEAS principles can be applied appropriately according to the objectives and purposes for which they were defined and developed, only in a context consistent with these guidelines.

At the end of the SEAS courses, the participants are asked to sign a statement that only those who are consistent and in line with these SOSORT guidelines in their daily clinical practice can publicly declare (eg on brochures, website etc.) that they apply the SEAS approach to their patients, furthermore being conscious that the SEAS accreditations are valid and can be obtained with a final examination only for those who have declared that their approach to scoliosis is in association with these guidelines.

What is ISICO?

Founded in 2003, the Italian Scientific Spine Institute (ISICO) promotes and develops innovative approaches to the rehabilitation and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders for people of all ages – from children to seniors.

ISICO stands out for its extensive and advanced clinical expertise, particularly in the field of scoliosis rehabilitation.

Through its research activities and training programs, carried out both in Italy and abroad, ISICO has become a recognized international reference point.
