SEAS is an acronym for “Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis”. The principles of SEAS are based on a specific form of auto-correction (termed active self-correction) that is taught individually to every patient and then associated with stabilizing exercises, including neuromotor control and proprioceptive training balance. The exercises are also incorporated into daily living activities. The SEAS approach is also characterized by a cognitive-behavioural approach towards the patient and his family to maximize compliance to treatment.
Exercise treatment is the key to a good rehabilitation approach to scoliosis.
SEAS exercises aim to avoid or at least postpone bracing and arrive at the end of growth with a presumably stable curvature.
When a brace has already been prescribed, exercises are mandatory to avoid all side effects of bracing, increase its function, and allow the spine to be stable during the weaning period and when the brace is abandoned.
The SEAS Accreditation Programme is a path that takes the participants step by step to deeper and certified knowledge of the SEAS approach.
The course (3 days) includes the basic teaching of the SEAS approach:
The participant must have been Level 1 certified at least 6 months prior to the Level 2 course.
The course (3 days) includes the advanced stage of treatment for scoliosis:
ISICO, in its approach to the conservative treatment of scoliosis, is consistent with the SOSORT guidelines of Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation treatment of idiopathic scoliosis during growth in all passages, starting from the clinical assessment to physiotherapy treatment with the SEAS exercises, up to treatment with a brace.
Hence, the SEAS principles can be applied appropriately according to the objectives and purposes for which they were defined and developed, only in a context consistent with these guidelines.
At the end of the SEAS courses, the participants are asked to sign a statement that only those who are consistent and in line with these SOSORT guidelines in their daily clinical practice can publicly declare (eg on brochures, website etc.) that they apply the SEAS approach to their patients, furthermore being conscious that the SEAS accreditations are valid and can be obtained with a final examination only for those who have declared that their approach to scoliosis is in association with these guidelines.
Founded in 2003, the Italian Scientific Spine Institute (ISICO) promotes and develops innovative approaches to the rehabilitation and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders for people of all ages – from children to seniors.
ISICO stands out for its extensive and advanced clinical expertise, particularly in the field of scoliosis rehabilitation.
Through its research activities and training programs, carried out both in Italy and abroad, ISICO has become a recognized international reference point.
These courses are exclusively for physiotherapists.
Participation is limited to 14–16 people.
Courses will be held in English, without translation.
IMPORTANT
Before the start of the course, every participant must read and become familiar with the “SOSORT Guidelines for Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis”:
